Vocalist and guitarist Kevin Breen and drummer Steven Gannon make up Kid Karate, a duo from Dublin who earlier this year released their EP 'Lights Out'. Get prepared for big riffs, big drums, big vocals, basically it's just a big slice of rock pie. BIG.
To start let's mention some similar sounding bands to Kid Karate, such as, and in no particular order, - Black Keys, DZ Deathrays, Middle Class Rut, Jack White, Fugazi...I could go on, but I think you'll get the picture. This is loud, unashamedly brash rock music that is built upon monster riffs and driven forward by Gannon's tribal drumming, amongst which all the while your brain gets melted by Kevin Breen's manic vocals.
'Two Times', the lead track from the record, is a perfect introduction to the band. You'll be sure to have lyrics such as 'I ain't comin' back, you won't hear from me no more!' seared into your brain after just one listen. The music may sound simple yet it's this raw element that makes it so exciting, good rock music should be like this, letting the listener in easily before holding onto them for dear life kicking and screaming!
Other tracks on the EP include the slow burning 'Heart', and the groovy as fuck 'This City'. The record closes with 'You Need Violence', which is perhaps the most different sounding track on the album, featuring a higher tempo and a relentless drive to punish the listener throughout.
'Lights Out' is one of the most exhilarating EP's we've come across this year, a record that has a singular desire from Kid Karate to utilise raw passion and determination to celebrate all that is great with rock music. *Much recommended for you rock heads out there! // Kid Karate
